For a brief overview of the 5 different offerings, I recommend reading this article at the link: http://www.biblecentre.org/topics/rkc_5_offerings.htm
In Leviticus 9:3-6, the people are told to bring a sin offering, a burnt offering, a peace offering, and a grain offering because the LORD would appear to them. God was going to manifest Himself to all the people in the Tabernacle. God manifested Himself in the Tabernacle of the person of Jesus Christ and He wants to manifest Himself in the ‘Tabernacle’ and ‘Temple’ of His people today! After the sacrifices were made and their blood poured out, Leviticus 9:23-24 says, “Moses and Aaron… blessed the people. Then the glory of the LORD appeared to all the people, and fire came out from before the LORD and consumed the burnt offering and the fat on the altar. When all the people saw it, they shouted and fell on their faces.” God’s glory came because the sacrifices were made and Moses and Aaron released the blessing on the people!
Nadab and Abihu
People seem to get away with things when God’s glory is not present, but they are just storing up for themselves judgment if they go on without repentance. Nadab and Abihu, Aaron’s sons, did not honor the LORD and acted as if they could worship and serve God any way that seemed fit to them. They and the people saw that you should not despise God’s way of doing things.
