Zephaniah’s prophecy includes the judgment that was coming for Judah, but the focus of it was the end of the age; chapter 1, verse 7 says, “… the day of the LORD is at hand.” Zephaniah 1:18 (ESV version) gives a clear warning of the very last days; it says, “Neither their silver nor their gold shall be able to deliver them on the day of the wrath of the LORD. In the fire of his jealousy, all the earth shall be consumed; for a full and sudden end he will make of all the inhabitants of the earth.” Although the destruction will cover the earth, Zephaniah 2:3 tells us He will hide those who seek Him in humility and righteousness when “He will reduce to nothing all the gods of the earth” (Zeph. 2:3). This short prophecy of the destruction that is coming to the world finishes with a beautiful promise of what is coming after. After it says in 3:8 that “All the earth shall be devoured with the fire of My jealousy,” the rest of the book tells of glory to come.
