The parable of the sower recorded in both Gospels in today’s reading is a foundational parable. Jesus said to His disciples in Mark 4:13 "Do you not understand this parable? How then will you understand all the parables?” How we “hear” and respond to God’s Word means everything! Jesus said in Luke 8:18, “Take heed how you hear. For whoever has, to him more will be given; and whoever does not have, even what he seems to have will be taken from him." When Jesus says “whoever has, to him more will be given,” He is refereeing to having “ears to hear.” If we have ears to hear God’s word, we will receive light, revelation, and the manifestation of God’s Word in our life. If we don’t have ears to hear, even what we seem to know will be “taken away;” it will produce nothing in our life. Jesus speaks in Luke 8:16 of how we can light a lamp and put it on a lamp stand to light the room or we could cover it. Either way the light is in the room, but the one way lights the room, and the other does not. His Word must be honored to the highest place in our life; a casual approach to God’s Word will not produce the fruit God desires in our life.
