_ We see in Chapter 27 what a mess we make of things when we try to do things our own way. It is the willing and obedient that will eat the good of the land. (Isaiah 1:19)
In chapter 29 Jacob would begin to work for his conniving uncle Laban. God would use these 20 years to purify Jacob and begin to show him how the blessing of the LORD really comes into someone’s life. In other words, he would see God does not need our help; He only needs our cooperation as we trust Him. Laban tricks Jacob and gives him Leah instead of Rachel after working for seven years for her; then Jacob must work seven more years for Rachel. Later we will see how Laban changes Jacobs’s wages ten times in an attempt to keep the blessing that belonged to Jacob (See Gen.31:7). Laban’s attempts would be unfruitful, and Jacob would see more clearly how conniving does not work. He would learn that God can bless us as we trust Him and He does not need the feeble works of our flesh.

Thank God that He is willing to work with us when we do try to do it ourselves. When we, in our pride, think we know something. I have taken long way with some things in my life, and when I have finally been beaten over the head enough times (by my own decisions and choices) that something clicks, and I finally understand how I got there....again....and how great the mercy of the Lord has been toward me, finally change can come. Peace can come. Freedom can come. What a great and loving Father we have, that will be longsuffering with us. That will work so personally with us! It's amazing. Jacob had that in him, that he had to get things for himself. Even though it was his mom's prompting the second time, he took the birthright when Esau was tired, hungry, and just didn't care for the moment. So God brough him where he needed to be, to show him. Even on the way there, the Lord opened up the heavens and spoke to him the promise, and in the end, when He would personally come down and wrestle with Jacob, until he became week in himself, and learned to lean on the Lord.
